About Kokura-ori
小倉織
小倉織は、地厚で丈夫、なめらかな木綿の織物です。経糸の密度が高いため、緯糸が見えず、表現としては、たて縞となります。凛として潔く、色の濃淡による立体的な世界を創りだし、なめし革のような風合いと共に他に類を見ない個性的な織物です。
Kokura-ori
Kokura-ori fabrics are a thick, durable and smooth fabric made of 100% cotton. Compared to ordinary fabrics, there are many vertical warp-yarns as the horizontal woof-yarns. The density of the vertical yarns creates the stripe-pattern. The style of the fabric is formal and graceful, and the use of subtle shades of a color results in a three-dimensional appearance. The texture of this unique fabric is similar to that of leather.

歴史
豊前小倉（現在の福岡県北九州市）の地で江戸時代（1600年代）から作り続けられてきた小倉織は、 武士の袴や帯として織られました。この地域で栽培された綿から紡いだ糸で、主に小笠原藩の婦女子が織った布は特産品として全国で珍重されました。徳川家康が鷹狩の際の羽織として愛用したと記録に残っていますし、徳川美術館には江戸時代中期（18世紀）の狂言装束としての「縞小倉羽織」が収蔵されています。井原西鶴、坪内逍遥、夏目漱石、森鴎外、芥川龍之介、司馬遼太郎など、多くの文豪の著作の中に、小倉織が度々登場するなど、広く認知されていた織物でした。 明治時代には文明開化の波のなかで、袴の特徴を引き継ぎ、男子学生の夏の制服として、「霜降り」と呼ばれるグレー無地の小倉織を製造し、小倉木綿、小倉服の名で全国に広がりました。あまりに人気があって製造が追いつかず、各地で小倉織に似たものが製造されていきました。 300年以上続いた小倉織は、昭和初期に一度途絶えましたが、染織家・築城則子氏が試行錯誤を繰り返し、1984年に復元、再生。築城氏に続き、小倉織の制作や史料の調査をする団体や個人作家の方々も活躍しています。また、先染め木綿糸による機械織りの小倉織を製造、販売する会社も誕生し、小倉織発祥の地での製造が本格的に再開しています。
History
Kokura-ori fabrics were woven mainly in Buzen Kokura (now Kitakyushu City) since the Edo Era(early 1600’s).It was used to make “hakama” trousers and “obi” sashes that were used by the samurai class. Since the Meiji Era(1868~) , the "hakama" style was developed into summer uniforms for male students, using factory-woven Kokura-ori in a salt and pepper pattern woven from grey yarns. The demand for Kokura-ori cotton clothing spread across the country, and factories could not keep up with demand, resulting in the manufacture of imitation Kokura fabrics that were manufactured in other areas of Japan. Kokura-ori fabrics were manufactured for more than 300 years, but production ceased in the early Showa Era（around 1930）. Textile artist Noriko Tsuiki succeeded to revive the fabric by hands in 1984 . Some members make it by hand-woven cotton threads. And then new brand “KOKURA SHIMA-SHIMA” was born. The cotton threads are yarn-dyed, then woven in factories. Kokura-ori will carry on into the 21st century.
文学の中の小倉織
『好色二代男』 井原西鶴（貞享元年） ……帯に木綿の小倉嶋。しかも細し。
『吾輩は猫である』 夏目漱石（明治38年） ……頭を奇麗に分けて、木綿の紋付の羽織に小倉の袴を着けて至極真面目そうな書生体の男である。
『田舎教師』 田山花袋（明治42年） ……暑い木陰のない路を歩いて来て、此処で汗になった詰襟の小倉の夏服を脱いで、瓜を食った時の旨かったことを清三は覚えている。
